In case you missed it – today was World Book Day.
Unsurprisingly, I almost did and had to cobble together a costume at the last minute.
But I’ve come to the conclusion after several years of this crap, that cutting out eye holes in a fabric face mask the night before is just how we do things in our household.
It’s hard enough having 3 kids let alone keeping up with their various schedules and activities. It’s a wonder most days that I manage to get them dressed and out of the door.
So, throw in the curveball of a themed school day and I’m well and truly fucked.
In the early days of parenting I relished these days. Dare I say it, I actually looked forward to them – often planning in advance the spectacular homemade delights that I could concoct, much to my eager children’s delight.
Fast forward to 2022 and I’ve got a pre-teen son that’s so utterly non-conformist that even the slightest hint of fancy dress sends him running for the hills. A wonderfully weird daughter who announced this year (with 24 hours notice no less) that she’d quite like to go as a giant cookie. And a 3-year-old, who if you leave her out, it’s really at your own peril!
I could, in all honesty, do without this shit.
I try so hard to keep them all happy, but it’s an impossible task most of the time. They are each forming their own very different personalities that it’s hard to keep up with. They are never all on the same page and this makes it even harder.
Luckily this year my son was happy to go in his own clothes – which is quite something as he usually opts for wearing his school uniform as an avoidance technique. We persuaded the middle one that a cookie just wasn’t feasible, so she picked Burglar Bill (hence the cutting out eye holes in a face mask shenanigans!)
And the youngest was totally blindsided with a day with grandma, so she didn’t even notice that she might have missed out on something.
All in all, 2022’s effort wasn’t too shabby after all.
We live to fight another day lads, I hope that you all did too.
May the odds be ever in your favour!
